Laser Sailing Tips for LaserFest

Excitement is brewing on the shores of Whitstable Yacht Club as we gear up for LaserFest 2023, the UK's premier laser sailing event (1st/2nd July). Whether you're a seasoned laser sailor or dipping your toes into the laser dinghy's waters for the first time, preparing for this event requires finesse, strategy, and a deep understanding of your laser dinghy.

As you ready yourself to race this July, here are some top tips to help you get a grip on your laser dinghy and ensure a stellar performance:

1. Get Intimate with Your Laser Dinghy: Simplicity is the essence of the Laser dinghy, with its single sail and minimal controls - the downhaul, outhaul, and vang. Understanding how to fine-tune these elements according to changing conditions can drastically improve your performance. Learn the art of adjusting your sail shape to maximise speed and stability.

2. Sail Trim and Balance: In a Laser, balance is everything. Master the technique of moving your weight in response to gusts and lulls to keep the boat flat. The mainsheet controls the angle and shape of the sail. Learn when to ease out for power in light winds and when to sheet in hard to de-power in heavy winds.

3. Master the Laser-Specific Techniques: Laser sailing demands unique techniques, such as the 'roll-tack' and 'roll-gybe'. The sudden shift of body weight flattens the dinghy, reducing drag and increasing speed. Practice these manoeuvres to get a leg-up on your competition.

4. Be Rule-Ready: Ensure you're au fait with the racing rules. Knowledge of the right-of-way rules, starting procedures, and mark rounding regulations can be the difference between success and disappointment. For LaserFest, familiarise yourself with the specific rules of sprint racing.

5. Harness the Wind: Recognising and utilising wind shifts can be a game-changer in a race. Learn to read wind indicators onshore, and observe changes on the water's surface. Remember, each wind shift is a potential opportunity to make gains on your competitors.

6. Master the Start: In sprint racing, a good start is key. Practice your timing and positioning at the start line. A few seconds can make a huge difference in your positioning for the rest of the race.

7. Understand Whitstable's Waters: Research Whitstable's typical sailing conditions, including local wind patterns, tides, and currents. Understanding these nuances could give you an invaluable edge on race day.

8. Keep a Cool Head: Mental resilience is just as important as physical skill in sailing. Stay calm, focused, and positive, even when things don't go as planned. The ability to recover and adapt can be the difference between a good sailor and a great one.

9. Savour the Experience: LaserFest is not just a sailing event; it's a celebration of the sailing community. Use this opportunity to learn from fellow laser sailors, soak up their experiences and insights, and of course, share a pint and a dance!

Remember, LaserFest's motto isn't just 'racing'; it's also 'music and beer'. Enjoy the journey, the camaraderie, and, above all, the sheer thrill of laser sailing. Fair winds, sailors, and see you at LaserFest 2023! #lasersailing
